Amongst Parisian pastry legends such as Pierre Hermé, Ladurée and Jean-Paul Hévin, Pain de Sucre is another big name in the pastry world recognized as one of the best patisseries in Paris. The masterminds behind this brilliant patisserie are Nathalie Robert and Didier Mathray who worked together for six years at Pierre Gagnaire’s 3 Michelin Star restaurant. This pastry duo introduced Pain de Sucre to the world in 2004 showcasing innovative treats and finding ways to marry sweet with savory as highlighted in Pain de Sucre foie gras cake.
Pain de Sucre came highly recommended by our homeboy Yue Wu who is an Parisian artist. This patisserie is one of his favorites and quickly became one of ours too. Located on rue Rambuteau in the heart of Paris, Pain de Sucre instantly won our hearts as we were greeted by large jars filled with big colorful marshmallows and alluring cakes perfectly arranged in display cases. There was also a little ice cream section set up in the corner of the store which we’ll have to sample the next time we’re in town. Pain de Sucre offers a selection of cakes (big and small), tarts, croissants, ice cream, chocolate, mille feuille, macarons and marshmallows. We completely trust Yue Wu when it comes to food so went with his recommendations.
We went H.A.M on the macarons and chose from a plethora of flavors including chocolate passion fruit, fresh mint chocolate, chestnut honey and salted butter caramel. Yue Wu was pushing the fresh mint chocolate pretty hard so we had a round of that and then some. As expected, the macarons were amazing and had the perfect texture – light and crispy shells with a chewy center. He also recommended the marshmallows with flavors such as whiskey, angelica, matcha green tea, dark chocolate coated in coconut flakes and more. I’m usually not that into marshmallows, but these bad boys were so effing good – not overly sweet, spongy and mad fluffy!
“It’s so fluffy I’m gonna DIE” !!!
